Corey Small had a good night. And a bad night.
Small scored five goals and set up another as the Vancouver Stealth upset the reigning champion Saskatchewan Rush 13-11 Friday in the Rush’s inaugural National Lacrosse League regular season game in Saskatoon.
Vancouver was coming off a 17-7 shellacking at the hands of the New England Black Wolves, the last-placed team in 2015. The Rush won it all last year while they were based out of Edmonton.
After the game, these Tweets came out.
No word Saturday morning on whether things worked out.
Small had played for the Rush before being traded to the Stealth early on last season. On Friday, he was shooting on Rush goalie Aaron Bold, who was his teammate this past summer with the Victoria Shamrocks. The Shamrocks, a Western Lacrosse Association perennial power, won the Mann Cup Senior A national club championship.
Here’s what Rush coach Derek Keenan told the Saskatoon StarPhoenix newspaper afterwards.
They outworked us in every aspect of the game. They earned the win. … In parts of the game, we played out of character, we lost composure, and maybe it’s because they were trying to do a little too much in front of a new fan base.
